On a private ceremony in Munich, Mr. Karl-Adolf Falter received the diploma of an honorary member of iarigai. Mrs. Helene Juhola, accompanied by Professor Nils Enlund and Dr. Mladen Lovrecek, Secretary General, delivered this mark of appreciation to Mr. Falter for his devoted service in the Association as Secretary General from 1996 to 2003.

Mr. Falter, who is recovering at his home in Munich, due to health reasons, could not have attended the conference in Leipzig in September 2006, when five former officials of iarigai were proclaimed as honorary members of the Association.

In September 2007 professor Nils Enlund (KTH, Stockholm) ended his service in the Board, where he was a member last seven years. From 2003 until 2007 he also held the position of the Vice president of iarigai.

Professor Enlund was very successfully in the development of conference programs, thus increasing the criteria and general level of contributions. He gave, as well, a significant contribution to the restructuring of the Association and in preparing the new Articles.

However, in the forthcoming period Professor Enlund will continue to serve as the Chairman of the Program committee.
New Vice president of iarigai

On the first Board meeting held immediately after the conference in Grenoble, Mr. Manfred Werfel was unanimously elected as the new Vice president of the Association.

Mr. Werfel is deputy CEO and head of research of IFRA, Darmstadt. He is member of the Board since 2003.
Scott Williams new member of the Board

On its 34th session the General Assembly of iarigai unanimously elected Dr. Scott Williams (RIT, Rochester, USA) as a new member of the Board. On this position he will replace Professor Nils Enlund, who just ended his service.

Dr. Williams is an associate professor at the School of Print Media of the Rochester Institute of technology and in 2006 he became the first official representative of this renowed institute in iarigai.
Members adopted the Declaration

On a special founding meeting that took place on 11 September 2007 in Grenoble after the conference, 30 present members supported and signed the Declaration, expressing their willingness to participate in tasks and goals as decribed in Section 1 of the new Articles. On the same occasion, the Articles - previously adopted by the General assembly - have been reconfirmed by all members.
 
During the conference dinner at La Bastille in Grenoble, Dr. Anne Blayo handed over the flag of iarigai to Ms. Susana Otero. She will head the conference team for the next event, that will be hosted by AIDO in Valencia, Spain, from 7 to 10 September 2008.

The flag will remain in Valencia until September 2008, when it will be taken to Stockholm, Sweden, where STFI will host the 36th International Research Conference in 2009.


 

 
 

 

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Grenoble medal for iarigai

on a ceremony held on Monday, 10 September 2007 in the City Hall, Mrs. Helene Juhola, President of iarigai received a medal of the City of Grenoble from the Mayor
Mr. Michel Destot.

In presence of all participants of the conference, Mr. Destot gave a welcome speech, explaining that this medal is a symbol of appreciation to iarigai for selecting Grenoble as the venue of its annual research gathering.


 
Helmut Kipphan first fellow member

Following the retirement of Dr. Helmut Kipphan from Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, the Board appointed him as the first fellow member of the Association.

Author of the outstanding and popular "Handbook of Print Media", Helmut Kipphan was a long time representative of Heidelberg in iarigai. Between 2003 and 2006 he has been a member of the Board, where he participated in bringing to life the new Articles. His successor as the representative of Heidelberg will be Dr. Axel Hauck.

After the European Commission supported the study on the competetiveness of the European printing industry, fostering the cooperation between the researchers and between research and industry was the main point of interest of the first Strategic meeting of iarigai. The event attracted attention of 42 participants from 12 different countries.

Invited speakers, Mr. Jean-Pierre Haber (EU Commission), Ms. Beatrice Klose (Intergraf) and Dr. Andreas Kleinscmit (CEI-Bois) gave a competent overview on different aspects of a networked research under the auspices of the EU. All participantsexpressed their interest and support for the idea of a European Research Network.

 
50th member joined iarigai

The Board of iarigai recently approved two new applications for membership in the Association. With them, the number of members increased to 50 organizations worldwide. New members are Manroland Druckmaschinen AG, that will be represented by Mr. Thomas Walther, while Dr. Abhay Sharma will represent another academic organization, the Department of Graphic Technology Management, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. New members will be introduced during the opening of
the 35th International research conference in Valencia in September 2008.

Kenneth M. Hoare MBE (1916-2008)

On March 13 2008, Mr. Kenneth M. Hoare, the first Secretary General passed away
at the age of 92. Mr Hoare played an important role in establishing the Association in 1965 and held the position of the Secretary General for more than three decades,
until 1977, and serving under seven chairmen. In September 2006 was declared a honorary member of the Association.

The Board and members of our Association will remember him not only for a long
and devoted service on this position, but also as a person who laid down the foundations of what iarigai is today.

iarigai registered in Darmstadt, Germany

Although with a rich more than fourty-years old history and tradition, iarigai was acting only as an informal interest group and has never been formally registered as an association. Therefore the Board decided and the General Assembly approved to take neccessary steps to resolve the legal status of the Association. This move required a number of actions, among other change and updating of the Articles. Following the legal procedure, iarigai is now entered into the register of associations, with the legal seat in Darmstadt, Germany. Thanks to the kindness of IFRA, the registered office will at their premises in Darmstadt, Washingtonplatz 1. The new status of iarigai will certainly make easier many actions planned in networking of members.
Excellent impressions from Valencia

The 35th International Research Conference of iarigai, held in Valencia, Spain from
7 to 10 September, was another succesfull event. Besides a high level program, friendly environment, created by this year's  host, AIDO, gave an added value to this traditional annual gathering of researchers and scientists from all over the world. The next 36th conference will be hosted by STFI-Packforsk  in Stockholm, Sweden in September 2009. During the conference dinner, Susana Otero traditionally handed over the iarigai flag to Dr. Marianne Klaman, the new conference director.
Uwe Bertholdt awarded

Traditional prize for the best presentation was this year awarded to Uwe Bertholdt (FOGRA, Munich) for his paper: Causes of matt/gloss effect (ghosting) in sheet-fed
offset (with co-author Ginna Sommer). Results of the contest, based on the voting of conference participants, were revealed during the conference dinner by Nils Enlund, chairman of the Program committee.

Mr Bertholdt was given a symbolic present by Ms. Helene Juhola, president of iarigai.
